Description
This Chesapeake pipe bowl was found at a site in County on the Coastal Plain. Chesapeake pipes have characteristic rouletted decorations that were made by incising the the clay with tools that had rounded pin-like ends. The designs often combined Virginia Indian and European motifs. Chesapeake pipes were produced by Europeans, Virginia Indians, and/or enslaved Africans, and were traded amongst groups during the early seventeenth century. (Photo enhanced)
